Stabbing incident results in intimidation arrest

TERRE HAUTE — A Terre Haute man was stabbed early Wednesday during an incident near 19th and Locust streets, and the suspect in the case has been arrested — but not for the stabbing.

Phillip Andrew Evans, 34, who resides in the 1900 block of Locust Street, was arrested for intimidation after allegedly threatening to shoot police investigating the stabbing.

Evans was expected to appear in Vigo Superior Court 1 on Wednesday morning, but court staff reported that Evans was too intoxicated to appear at the time court convened. His initial probable cause hearing is now set for this morning.

Assistant Chief Shawn Keen of the Terre Haute Police Department told the Tribune-Star that police were dispatched to the area of 19th and Locust about 1 a.m. on a report of a man with multiple stab wounds lying in the street.

Keen said the victim was not cooperative with police in their initial investigation, and he was taken to an area hospital for treatment. None of the stab wounds were life threatening, Keen said.

Police at the scene followed a blood trail from where the victim was found to a nearby upstairs apartment. Officers cordoned off the area and attempted to make contact with someone inside the apartment. A few minutes later a man inside the apartment popped his head out the window and began yelling at officers, Keen said. The man claimed to possess a gun and said he would shoot officers, Keen said. The man also reportedly threw beer bottles and other things out the window at police.

Police arrested the man, Evans, who told police he was a relative of the man who had been stabbed. Keen said that Evans claimed the victim entered the apartment while Evans was asleep and attacked him.

Evans was arrested for intimidation due to his threats against police, but the investigation into the stabbing incident is continuing.
