Murder charge filed against husband

Body of Allyson Elmi-Lewis found in eastern Vigo County

TERRE HAUTE — A murder charge has been filed against the estranged husband of a woman whose body was found Nov. 3 in rural eastern Vigo County.

Enzert G. Lewis, 28, will appear in Vigo Superior Court 3 at 10 a.m. today on new charges filed Tuesday alleging that he killed Allyson Elmi-Lewis on Oct. 10.

He has also been charged with altering the scene of a death, and obstruction of justice, both class-D felonies, and invasion of privacy, a class-A misdemeanor.

The charges were announced Tuesday afternoon by Vigo County Prosecutor Terry Modesitt, Sheriff Greg Ewing and a team of investigators who Ewing said have been working around-the-clock since the woman’s body was found just off Hyde Road along the Vigo-Clay County Line about a mile north of Indiana 42.

“This has been a long investigation,” Ewing said. “We have pulled all resources together that we could to ensure her killer was located.” He described the investigation as a thoughtful process involving officers from multiple agencies.

Enzert Lewis was arrested Nov. 6 on a charge of invasion of privacy after he allegedly admitted to investigators that he violated a no-contact order issued by the court in a case of domestic violence involving his estranged wife. He has been held in the Vigo County Jail on that charge.

Just before Tuesday’s announcement, Detective Sgt. John Childs and Capt. John Moats served Lewis with the information of the new charges.

Modesitt said that several items of evidence collected during the investigation have been submitted to the Indiana State Police lab for testing. The probable cause affadavit filed with the court mentions several blood-stained items found in the apartment on 14th Street the couple shared and also items from the apartment found in Lewis’ bedroom at his cousin’s home on Monterey Avenue.

The probable cause affidavit also states that Lewis talked about killing his wife with his cousin and with another inmate in the Vigo County Jail.
