Rural Clay County collision leaves one driver dead

CLAY COUNTY, Ind. — A head-on collision in rural Clay County resulted in one driver’s death Wednesday afternoon.

According to a media release issued by the Clay County Sheriff’s Department, the accident occurred between two cars at 2:37 p.m. east of County Road 425 West and Indiana 42.

The accident was still under investigation Wednesday evening, but at the scene deputies reportedly found a vehicle driven by Nicholas Sutherlin, 20, Brazil, crashed into another driven by Charlotte Guthrie, 66, Brazil. Seth Batchelor, 19, Carbon, was a passenger of Sutherlin’s vehicle.

Both Sutherlin and Batchelor were reportedly trapped in the front seats of their vehicle and had to be extricated by emergency responders, who then transported them to St. Vincent Clay Hospital for evaluation. A condition update was not available that evening.

Guthrie was reportedly pronounced dead at the scene. An autopsy is scheduled for today at Terre Haute Regional Hospital.
