Valley schools moving into the digital realm

Southwest Parke Community School Corp. isn’t the only Wabash Valley school district moving toward a digital curriculum.

Among those moving forward is Northeast School Corp. in Sullivan County, which plans to provide high school students with iPads next fall for the 2012-13 school year.

Students in grades 9-12 at North Central and Union high schools will receive the iPads, said Superintendent Mark Baker.

“They’ll rent them, similar to a textbook,” Baker said. About 550 high school students will be affected.

Textbooks will be in the classroom as a resource, but not assigned to students, he said. Students will be able to take their iPads home. The district is developing policies covering equipment and curriculum.

Teachers also will receive iPads, and “they are pretty excited about it,” he said. Staff development will be provided.

The district is putting wireless networks in all of its buildings, including elementary schools.

The iPads and the installation of wireless networks is costing the district about $240,000, Baker said.

To fund the initiative, the district refinanced some construction bonds and obtained technology loans through the Indiana Department of Education.

The reason for moving to iPads and digital curriculum “is to keep our kids ahead of the game,” Baker said. “Also, by having the technology, we hope it will draw students into our corporation.”

South Vermillion School Corp. also is “going in that direction,” said Superintendent Dave Chapman.

Next month, district representatives will be visiting other schools that have pursued a 1:1 initiative in which each student receives a device. “If we just sit back and watch, everybody else will pass us by,” Chapman said. “We’ll never be able to catch up.”

In the next five years, “It will probably be the norm” for schools, he said. By giving each student an electronic device, whether an iPad, netbook or other tool, “It basically takes the classroom wherever the student goes.”
