WEST TERRE HAUTE —
Six seniors at West Vigo High School have earned their child development associate (CDA) certification, a significant accomplishment, according to an Indiana Department of Education spokeswoman.
The West Vigo seniors are Samantha DeLattre, Jessica Harden, Shelby Hughes, Rachel Moss, Mikaela Silcock and Shelbi Neidlinger.
The students obtained the credential through the instructional direction of Kathy Miller, a West Vigo teacher who is retiring. Her last day was Friday.
“A lot of credit should be given to the school and the students,” said Stephanie Sample, spokeswoman with the Indiana DOE. “They are a model for schools around the state.”
The students have completed a “really rigorous program,” and the certification is “highly desirable,” Sample said.
The six West Vigo graduating seniors are among the first high school students across the nation to receive the certification, Sample said.
The CDA certification is recognized as a benchmark for employment, if not a requirement to be employed in the field of early childhood care. It standardizes the training for the early childhood sector, according to a West Vigo news release.
It is awarded to a person who is able to meet the specific needs of children and who, with parents and other adults, work to nurture children’s physical, social, emotional and intellectual growth.
Students demonstrated competencies in building positive and productive relationships with families. They also have learned the foundations of program management.
The CDA certification can provide an extra level of assurance to parents that their children are receiving quality care.
These seniors will have the opportunity to gain employment in a child care center as they graduate high school.
Miller said the students went through a national certification program. “I’ve worked on this three years … I really feel good that I was able to get this process in place.”
With the credential, the students will be able to obtain jobs that are above entry level in child care settings, Miller said. They also have earned nine to 12 Ivy Tech college credits.
“Any industry certification we can provide is a big plus,” Miller said. “It helps students get a job.”
The Helping Hands in West Terre Haute paid for the $325 application fees for students, Miller said.
