Greene County felon sentenced on gun charge

Greene County — A Greene County man was sentenced to more than five years in prison for unlawfully owning a firearm as a convicted felon and possessing an unregistered firearm.

Brandon Criss, 28, of Linton was sentenced to 70 months in prison. He was also sentenced to three years of supervised release to be served at the end of his prison term, according to a news release issued Friday by U.S. Attorney Joseph Hogsett.

Criss was arrested in July 2011 in connection with a shooting that took place at Goose Pond State Park in Greene County. Criss reportedly fired a sawed-off shotgun near the parking area, injuring a park visitor who was nearby.

Despite his injuries, the injured park visitor was able to drive his vehicle to the Linton Police station to report the shooting.

The Greene County Sheriff’s Department and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources responded to Goose Pond and located Criss, who was attempting to get away on a stolen bicycle, according to the release.

At the time of his arrest,  police said, Criss admitted to firing the weapon but denied knowing there were park patrons nearby.

The shotgun was a “short-barreled” model measuring 111⁄2 inches in length. Owning such a weapon requires a special registration that Criss did not have.

Authorities also learned later that Criss was a convicted felon, making it illegal under federal law for him to possess a firearm or ammunition.
