‘Time to Giddy up,’ TH paralympian tweets

Austin swims to 6th at Paralympic Games; more events to come

TERRE HAUTE — A Terre Haute Torpedo swam to sixth best in the world Saturday, with more shots yet to come this week.

Terre Haute swimmer Evan Austin took sixth place overall in the 100-meter breaststroke event at the 2012 Paralympic Games in London, according to Terre Haute South Vigo High School and Torpedoes coach Jeff Thompson.

“It was his second best time ever,” Thompson said of his protégé’s time of 1 minute, 25:74 seconds.

Austin was seeded eighth in the event, and ended up swimming faster in the evening finals than the morning prelims.

On his twitter account, Austin tweeted earlier Saturday, “Time to giddy up! #TeamUSA let’s do this!”

Thompson said he’s been following Austin from home throughout the competition. And while he’s doing fantastic so far, there’s more success yet to come, he said, noting they plan to tackle the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio.

“It’s a process and you learn from every step along the way,” he said. “There aren’t too many people in this community that can say they swam in an Olympic final, and there are a lot of people that are very proud of him.”

In addition to Saturday’s breaststroke competition, Austin is set to compete in a men’s 4 x 100 freestyle relay today, a 200-meter individual medley event Wednesday and the 100-meter freestyle and a 4 x 100 medley relay later next week.
