Efforts to stop train protect driver of car overturned on rail tracks

TERRE HAUTE — Quick thinking in a crisis may have saved a life early Friday when a Vigo County Sheriff's Deputy acted to get an approaching train stopped before it could strike a car with a woman trapped inside.

About 9 a.m. Friday morning, Brandi Edwards, 28, of Terre Haute drove off the road as she was travelling south on Houseman Street in southern Vigo County. On a curve, her car hit an icy patch, sending her vehicle down an embankment. Her car overturned and came to rest on a CSX railroad track just north of Springhill Drive.

Edwards was trapped in her car and had to be freed by emergency responders from the Riley and Honey Creek fire departments. Before she was freed from the vehicle, Deputy Tim Taylor of the Vigo County Sheriff's Department was among the first at the scene and — based upon training from CSX — was able to inform any approaching trains.

Vigo County Central Dispatch also called CSX to warn of the accident, said Chief Deputy Clark Cottom.

Thanks to the warnings, an approaching CSX train came to a stop about two miles from the accident scene, he said.

Edwards remained alert during the rescue. She was transported to Union Hospital complaining of back and leg pain, according to police.
