Y’s weight loss challenge under way

Goal is to lose pounds, donate food for needy

TERRE HAUTE — “Lose a Ton, Give a Ton” got an official kickoff — and weigh-in — at the Vigo County YMCA on Wednesday morning.

The program is designed to help the community get healthier and also to provide food for needy children.

The goal is for participants to collectively lose 2,000 pounds of excess weight and also to give away 2,000 pounds of food to the Vigo County School Corp. Back Pack program.

“We want to promote health, support youth and make a difference,” said Ryan Daffer, the Y’s community wellness coordinator.

Individuals and businesses can sign up, and participants don’t have to be Y members. Weigh-ins began Wednesday and end March 28-29, right before spring break.

For every pound someone loses, that individual is asked to give a pound of a specific food item to the VCSC Back Pack program. Otherwise, there is no cost to participate.

Among those “weighing in” were Dan Tanoos, Vigo County schools superintendent, and Troy Fears, executive director of United Way of the Wabash Valley.

“There’s nothing worse than being in poverty and someone being hungry and not being able to eat,” Tanoos said. “On behalf of our students, those most in need, I say thank you for what you are doing to help them. What you are giving, in return, you’ll get trifold.”

He estimated about 700 students are benefiting from the Back Pack program.

Among those who signed up is Rachael Spencer, 38, who has seven children. She is a Y member who tries to work out at least three times a week.

Her goal is to lose 50 pounds in a year. “I want to lose weight and get healthy, but also to support the Back Pack program,” she said.

Marjorie Hays of Rockville attended to learn more about it and may try to involve residents in Parke County.

While the goal is 2,000 pounds in weight loss and 2,000 pounds of food, “I hope we far exceed that goal,” Daffer said. “It’s going to be a great experience.”
