Wednesday accident pushes vehicle on to railroad tracks

TERRE HAUTE — A Jasonville woman suffered injuries believed not to be life threatening Wednesday afternoon when her car was pushed on to railroad tracks crossing U.S. 41 in front of an oncoming train after being struck from behind, Indiana State Police said.

The woman, 57-year-old Denise A. Ricketts, though injured, was able to regain her composure and drive her damaged vehicle off the tracks to avoid being hit by the train, police said in a news release.

The accident occurred at about 1:03 p.m. in the northbound lanes of U.S. 41 just north of Harlan Drive.

Preliminary investigation revealed northbound U.S. 41 traffic was stopped for a train approaching from the west. Ricketts’ car, while stopped, was struck in the rear by a pickup truck driven by 20-year-old Kade Michael King of Dugger, according to a news release. The rear-end collision forced Ricketts’ car on to the railroad tracks.

Ricketts was extricated from her vehicle by Honey Creek Fire/Rescue and transported to Terre Haute Regional Hospital for treatment of neck, back and rib injuries. Her seatbelt was in use, police said.

King, who was uninjured, was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid a crash and seatbelt not in use.

A passenger in the King vehicle, 42-year-old, Cheryl Sue Pickard of Brazil, was slightly injured but refused medical treatment.

Impaired driving did not play a role in this crash, the report stated.
