22-year-old arrested in connection with January carjacking attempt

TERRE HAUTE — A Lewis man has been arrested in connection with an attempted carjacking that was reported in January.

Ricky Adams, 22, appeared via video in Vigo Superior Court 1 on Friday where Judge John Roach appointed a public defender for him.

A warrant for his arrest had been issued in January after Terre Haute Police investigated an incident that occurred at a gas station on Wabash Avenue near 22nd Street.

Two women told police that they had been out drinking with Adams when they stopped their vehicle at the gas station. While the driver went inside the gas station, Adams allegedly turned to the other woman and demanded that she give him her cell phone. He allegedly threatened to kill her and her son, and then began punching her in the head.

The court document states that the victim got out of the car and ran inside the gas station, reporting to her friend what had happened. The driver ran outside to her car where Adams had moved into the driver’s seat and was trying to leave the parking lot. The driver told police she grabbed the gear shift and put the car into park, then pulled Adams out of her car. The woman said he then kicked out her driver’s side headlight and fled the area.

Adams has been charged with robbery and attempted car jacking, both class-B felonies, and attempted auto theft, a class-D felony.

He was serving a sentence in the Clay County Jail before his appearance in court Friday, and he has 14 months remaining to serve on that sentence.

Adams is to return to court Monday with his public defender.
