Director selected for new Vigo YMCA

Mom-of-three, ‘established’ community member to head facility

TERRE HAUTE — The new Vigo County YMCA — expected to open later this month — has its first director.

Clay County YMCA officials have named Eleanor Ramseier, a fitness enthusiast, mother-of-three and long-time Terre Haute real estate professional, as the facility’s branch director.

“My heart has always been with families,” Ramseier said Friday. The Vigo County YMCA “is for the whole community.”

Ramseier was appointed by the Clay County YMCA’s board of directors and its CEO, Deb Plummer.

“Eleanor Ramseier is an established member of the Vigo County community with a passion for the mission and goals of the YMCA,” Plummer said Friday. “She will be instrumental in establishing a culture of belonging and connection that will be critical to the YMCA’s long-term success in Vigo County.”

The Clay County YMCA expanded its management operations to Vigo County earlier this year.

The new Vigo County YMCA will be in Fairbanks Park in a building that once housed the Terre Haute YWCA, the Terre Haute Family Y and Riverbank Family and Fitness.

Plummer announced last month that the Vigo County facility would open May 21 if it raised $100,000 and gained 320 members.

“Memberships are coming in very slowly. We have a long way to go to reach our goal,” Plummer said Friday.

However, Ramseier said interest in memberships is strong in Vigo County.

“We’re getting so many calls and so many people are so excited about the Y,” Ramseier said. “It’s really cool to see how the public is getting behind this.”

Beginning Tuesday, volunteers will be providing membership applications at the new Vigo County YMCA facility in Fairbanks Park and at Baesler’s Market, Ramseier said. The applications will be available at the Y from 1-2 p.m. and from 4-6 p.m. They will be available at Baesler’s from 4-6 p.m.

Donations to the Vigo County YMCA, which are tax deductible, can be made at any First Financial Bank branch or online at vigocountyymca.org.

Before being named branch director of the Vigo County Y, Ramseier worked alongside her husband, Tim Ramseier, at the not-for-profit Youth for Christ of the Wabash Valley for many years. That provided valuable experience for her new role, she said.

“He was a great coach,” Ramseier said of her husband’s leadership at the youth ministry. “Our hearts have always been with the youth and the community.”

Ramseier was attracted to her new position after seeing the operations of the Clay County YMCA, she said.

“I saw the way Deb Plummer and the employees there manage and handle the Clay County Y. It is exciting,” Ramseier said. “It’s managed well. It feels like home. I realized that is a place I want to be a part of.”

Ramseier said she was also impressed by the Clay County YMCA’s commitment to the organization’s founding principles.

“They wanted to bring it back to its roots as a truly young men’s and women’s Christian association,” Ramseier said. “That really sealed the deal for me.”
