Twelve new dancers have signed on to the 2012 Dancing with the Terre Haute Stars fundraiser to benefit CHANCES for Indiana Youth.
The new dancers received their instructions and how-to’s for fundraising during a Monday luncheon at Terre Haute Regional Hospital.
Event chairperson Terri Hemminghouse of CASY commended the new dancers for doing something out of their personal comfort zones in order to help create a safe and healthy community for youth and families, which is the goal of CFIY.
For some competitors, matching fleet feet to the music may not be much of a stretch.
“I like to dance,” said Eurico Ferreira when he introduced himself to the other competitors. A native of Brazil in South America, Ferreira said he has lived in the United States for 37 years, and he looks forward to the dance competition
The event’s 2011 champion, Terri McGuire, raised more than $13,000 by selling tables, tickets and collecting donations. She said she spent the whole year fundraising, and she enjoyed the support of sponsor First Financial Bank in her efforts.
The month of June is the fundraising start for the event. The dancers will receive their dance lessons from The Dance Studio in the months of July and August. Also in August, the dancers must select their outfits for the the competition.
The event is set for the night of Sept. 28 at Hulman Center. Tickets are $60 per person. Tables of eight are $480 each.
The dancers earn points for their fundraising and can receive up to 10 points from each judge on the night of the competition.
Every table of eight sold earns a dancer 200 points. Every other dollar raised earns one point, and the dancer earns 50 percent of the fair market value of any silent auction item donated to CHANCES.
Hemminghouse said the fundraiser is vital to the many programs supported by CFIY. Among those programs are Afternoons R.O.C.K. in Indiana, an after school program; Summer Camp RAVE, a day camp for youth in kindergarten through fifth grade; Big Brothers Big Sisters, a mentoring program; CHANCES Teen Court; Youth As Resources, a community service project; Tobacco Prevention and Cessation, discouraging youth tobacco use; Safe Kids Coalition, teaching young children and families how to live and play safely; and Indiana SADD, working with high school students.

Jones of Vectren, Bernice Helman of Troy Helman Realty and Patti Milazzo of Regional Hospital.
