Terre Haute Children’s Museum unveils new exhibits

TERRE HAUTE — Portals to yet more dimensions of science education opened wide this weekend in Terre Haute.

Children scampered about the grand opening of new exhibits on the third floor of the Terre Haute Children’s Museum, and even grown-ups found things to learn.

Paul Harbaugh brought his wife and two grandchildren to the museum at Eighth Street and Wabash Avenue, remarking at what he’d just learned reading about soybeans and their many uses.

“This is the first time I’ve ever been here,” he said, adding the exhibits are fun for kids, and adults could likewise learn a thing or two.

Up on the third floor, new exhibits opened for display after a spring of renovation and planning. At the west end, an unfinished house remains open for visitors to see the project from gravel in crawl spaces to different types of roofs and joists. A live-action television studio where visitors can become WTHCM meteorologists provides educational material about weather, as well as the chance for people to see themselves on screen.

Patti Strong, operations coordinator for the museum, said the live creature exhibits have been much anticipated, yielding several terrariums filled with Rosehair tarantulas, Madagascar hissing cockroaches, poison dart frogs and a leopard gecko named Larry, among others.

“People should come and see it because we have a lot of different things now,” she said, pointing out the completed wall mural, “Flightful Fantasy: We can fly, we can fly.” Other exhibits include a live bee hive, encased inside an artificial tree. Visitors can watch honey being produced by the bees, while reading more about the process.

Deedee Buice said the museum has changed significantly in recent years. A resident of Bartlesville, Okla., she said she’d come to visit her daughter over the weekend, bringing her niece from Arizona and two sons, ages 8 to 10.

“The boys always want to come here whenever we come through,” she said, recalling their trips to the museum’s former site up the street. “This is probably our third time here.”

The weather studio on the third floor topped her own list of favorites this weekend, she said, adding there’s always something new to see.
