Clay County issues burn ban

TERRE HAUTE — Clay County commissioners, meeting in an emergency session Thursday, enacted a ban on outdoor burning in the west-central Indiana county.

The burn ban, in effect for seven days, prohibits the following:

• Campfires and/or other recreational fires, unless enclosed in a fire ring, with dimensions of 23 inches in diameter and 10 inches high or larger;

• Open burning of any kind using conventional fuel such as wood, or other combustible matter, with the exception of grills fueled by charcoal briquettes or propane; and

• The burning of debris, such as timber, vegetation, including such debris that results from building construction activities.

In addition, the declaration states:

• Where burning in barrels is authorized, each such barrel must have a 1⁄4 inch mesh top; and burning in such barrel will  be authorized from dawn to dusk only.

• Charcoal from permitted grills shall not be removed from the grills until the charcoal has been thoroughly extinguished.

• The personal use of any and all fireworks shall be discouraged.

Local and mutual-aid fire departments responding to fires associated with burn ban violations can seek reimbursement of costs associated with the response, and any individual found in violation of the ordinance will be fined  $300 per day, with each day of being in violation considered a separate offense.
