Woodgate residents taking Cobblestone issue back to county commissioners

TERRE HAUTE — The dispute between Woodgate and Cobblestone Crossing in southern Vigo County remains unresolved two weeks after the Vigo County Commissioners called for continued negotiations between the two sides.

Earlier this month, the commissioners ordered that no new building permits be issued for Cobblestone until the southside development and residents of Woodgate and other nearby neighborhoods resolved their disagreement.

Monday morning, residents of Woodgate and other neighborhoods around Cobblestone plan to attend the Vigo County Commissioners meeting to report a lack of a resolution, neighborhood residents said in a statement issued Monday.

Residents of the neighborhoods complain that Cobblestone has constructed apartment buildings in places where condominiums and single-family homes were planned. They also believe the apartments were improperly permitted, without the necessary steps taken for zoning changes.

County officials disagree. However, two weeks ago, the commissioners ordered the county building inspector to withhold any further building permits for Cobblestone until the dispute is resolved.

Residents of the older neighborhoods adjacent to Cobblestone want the development to pay for construction of a wall between the apartments and the neighborhoods. The wall is needed for neighborhood security, according to the statement, which was issued Monday by Preserving Our Neighborhood Developments, an ad hoc group opposing the apartment construction.

Cobblestone Crossing is a commercial and residential development on U.S. 41 south of Woodgate and north of Ivy Tech. The development has several new apartment buildings under construction.

Residents of Woodgate and Viscaya Point, which are adjacent to Cobblestone, plan to attend the commissioners’ meeting today at 9 a.m. at the Vigo County Annex.
