2 sent to hospital after accident on Interstate 70

TERRE HAUTE — An accident sent two people to an Indianapolis hospital Saturday evening, delaying Interstate 70 traffic for more than an hour.

According to a media release issued by the Indiana State Police, the two-vehicle accident occurred at 7:20 p.m. near the 25 mile marker of Interstate 70 in Clay County. An SUV reportedly was traveling east in the passing lane as it approached a construction zone. Both the passing and driving lane were “at or near a complete stop due to a backup in the zone,” the report states.

The driver of the SUV, Joey Barker, 27, Elk City, Okla., reportedly failed to slow his vehicle and veered into the driving lane to avoid stopped traffic in the passing lane. In doing so, his vehicle struck a semitrailer in the rear, according to the report.

Both Barker and his passenger, Cody Finley, 19, were trapped inside their vehicle for an hour as emergency responders worked to extricate them. The two were flown to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis complaining of lacerations, abrasions and internal injuries. According to the report, it was unknown if seat belts were in use or if drugs and alcohol were a factor.

The driver of the semi, James M. Tew, 64, Clear Lake, Wis., was reportedly not injured.

According to personnel at Methodist Hospital, Barker remained there in fair condition Sunday while Finley was reported to be in good condition.

Eastbound traffic on the interstate was diverted for nearly 11⁄2 hours onto Indiana 59 North and U.S. 40 East to U.S. 231 South where it could return to the interstate.
