TERRE HAUTE —
The hard work of parading about town complete, hundreds headed to the Wabash Valley Fairgrounds for a little horsing around the corral.
Members of the Wabash Valley Horseman’s Association hosted their annual post-parade show at the corral on the southwest side of the fairgrounds Wednesday afternoon. Playing games in boots and cowboy hats, kids and adults alike braved the 100-degree heat for a little fun.
Christina Durham-Muncy, parade committee chairwoman, said the turnout was strong given the high temperatures which have been baking the Wabash Valley for weeks. Horse owners took care to keep themselves and their horses cool as best they could.
“It’s very warm, but we’re having a great turnout,” Durham-Muncy said.
Cambri Booe, 7, and her cousin Kaleb Shonk, 16, had three of their family’s horses resting beneath the shade of a tree as the games were being prepared. The family from Clay City rested beneath a tent that was pitched alongside its stock trailers.
Booe explained that good hydration is part of the strategy involved in keeping Rose, Red Hot and Cody healthy before taking them out for barrel racing.
Shonk had signed up for the “gaming events” such as barrel racing, flags and poles.
“This is my first year,” he said. “I like it — the speed and competition.”
Deborah Shahadey, 2011 Frontier Gal and the organization’s secretary, said working with horses teaches kids about responsibility and is something they can do with their friends.
“It’s just good, clean fun,” she said. “And like me, I never grew out of it.”
A lifelong rider, Shahadey joked she first began while in her mother’s belly. These days she’ll ride for hours at a time around her New Goshen home.
Games included sack races, egg toss and boot races, which didn’t require horses. Shahadey said the organization welcomes the community to its events, regardless of whether people own animals or not. The programs allow kids to be near horses they might otherwise never see.
“And kids love horses,” she said.
Bailey Halloran, 13, one of the winners of the Most Creative Costume Award, rode 26-year-old Big Holly out of the corral. Both were Irish green apparel. Wearing a green top hat soaked with sweat, the Honey Creek Middle School student said her theme was based on family heritage.
“Because we’re Irish,” the daughter of Bernie and Patty Halloran said.
