Storm downs limbs, knocks out power

TERRE HAUTE — Hundreds of Vigo County residents were without power Monday night after a powerful storm moved through the area, bringing hail and damaging winds to some areas.

The largest concentration of power outages was in south-central Vigo County along U.S. 41. Other outages were reported in north Terre Haute and in southeastern Vigo County.

Duke Energy reported more than 700 Vigo County customers without power as of 9:30 p.m. Vigo County Central Dispatch reported several trees down, mostly in rural parts of southern Vigo County.

Rick Burger with Duke Energy said crews were expected to have power restored to most people affected by early to mid-morning today.

“We knew it was coming,” Burger said, adding that most of the outages appeared to be caused by trees falling on power lines between the south-side Walmart and Ivy Tech.

The National Weather Service issued a Hazardous Weather Outlook” report for a large part of Indiana Monday night, including Vigo, Sullivan, Clay, Parke, Vermillion and Greene counties. The outlook warned of damaging winds, small hail and dangerous lightning.
