Dashing for a good cause

Dachshunds take to the track to benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure

TERRE HAUTE — Temperatures were already in the 80s early Saturday morning, as a couple dozen hot dogs relished a run for charity.

The second annual Dachshund Dash kicked off before 10 a.m. at the Vigo County Fairgrounds, with tail-wagging wiener dogs lining up at the marks, ready to race for the Wabash Valley Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

Organizer Gwen Hicks said participants this year came from as far as Kansas to participate.

“We ended up with 22,” she said of dogs, which ranged in age from 1 to 10 years, and weight from 5 to 20 pounds. “If you’ve never seen them race, it’s hysterical.”

A short-legged, long-bodied member of the hound family, the name “Dachshund” is of German origin and means “badger dog,” according to information provided by the American Kennel Club, which adds that due to their build, they are often referred to as “wiener dogs.”

Hicks said the event allows for a good time while raising money, pointing out the dogs’ owners take their racing to heart.

“As with any pet, it’s a passion,” she said. “These people are passionate about their dogs.”

A small crowd filled the grandstands to watch the wiener dogs wiggle down the track, dressed in brightly-colored jerseys with numbers attached.

Danielle Woods held Callie B., an 8-year-old Dachshund ready for her first run of the morning.

“We’ve never raced her before, but she is fast,” Woods said, sure her pet would be able to cut the mustard in the competition. Her dedication to the breed comes from her parents, she said, adding they have five Dachshunds and she has two. “We love our wiener dogs.”

Vickie Norton was among the 50 volunteers helping out that morning, selling T-shirts on behalf of Susan G. Komen.

“It’s a good cause,” she said, adding the event is fun to watch. “I like the dogs. I think they’re cute.”

The proud owner of a German Shepherd herself, Norton said she thought it best to leave her pet at home though.

“I was scared to bring him out there, but I’m sure he’d like to play with them,” she laughed.
