Another proposed business development in Vigo County is facing opposition from those living nearby.
Several residents of Indiana 63 near the U.S. federal prison complex told members of the Area Plan Commission Wednesday evening that they oppose plans to build a Dollar General store at the corner of Springhill and Indiana 63.
“My neighborhood means everything to me,” said Jane Ann Taylor, who lives near the proposed store site. “We don’t need Dollar General in our neighborhood,” she told the commission.
Several other residents of the area expressed similar opinions, stating that they worried about a drop in property values, traffic, noise, privacy, safety and trash.
“My home is going to be devalued,” said Lora Piper, another resident of the neighborhood.
Representatives of Foster Builders Inc. of Sullivan, which would be constructing the Dollar General gave a site plan of the proposed store to members of the plan commission. They also vowed to work to meet the neighbor’s concerns.
“We want to be good neighbors,” said Derrick Goodman of Foster Builders. “We’re trying to serve people.”
At the end of about 30 minutes of discussion, a motion to give a favorable recommendation to the project to the county commissioners failed by a 4-5 vote. However, it takes 8 members of the commission to make an official recommendation, so the project will go to the commissioners without a recommendation from the plan commission.
Area Plan Commissioners voting for a favorable recommendation were John Hanley, Wayne Langman, Steve Marrs and Mark Tarrh. Those opposed to a favorable recommendation were Larry Agee, Norm Froderman, Todd Nation, Earl Rodgers and Brent Spier.
This was the fourth time in 2012 the Area Plan Commission has seen vocal opposition to a proposed business project from nearby residents. Last month the commission met for five hours regarding a proposed oil well project on Old Maple Avenue.
