TERRE HAUTE —
A semitrailer collided with a passenger car Wednesday afternoon on Terre Haute’s south side, leaving at least one person injured.
It took emergency responders about an hour to remove a motorist from a badly-damaged Chevrolet passenger car that was struck from behind by a semitrailer at the intersection of U.S. 41 South and Springhill Drive about 5:15 p.m.
No condition report on the injured motorist was available at presstime.
A witness at the scene who asked not to be identified said the passenger car was stopped at the intersection for a red light when struck from behind by the semitrailer. The rear of the automobile was crushed and the vehicle was pushed through the intersection where it collided with another car.
The semitrailer appeared not to slow down until after striking the stopped passenger car, the witness said.
The Vigo County Sheriff’s Department, the Indiana State Police, Trans-Care, the Honey Creek Fire Department, Terre Haute Fire Department and Clay County Emergency Management were on the scene.
Because of the accident, which took place about 5:15 p.m., northbound traffic on U.S. 41 was diverted temporarily to Springhill Drive. All lanes were reopened to traffic by a little past 6 p.m.
