Former office manager suspect in $162K in thefts

TERRE HAUTE — The former office manager of two Terre Haute businesses faces nine felony charges after an audit revealed $162,000 in thefts dating back to early 2009.

Cheryl Drake, 44, appeared Monday in Vigo Superior Court 3 where Judge David Bolk read allegations of one class-C felony forgery and eight class-D felony fraud counts.

Detective Pete Holvey investigated a complaint from Steel Guard Safety Corp. and Terre Haute Tent and Awning that an audit by an accountant showed unauthorized use of company credit cards, questionable checks and unauthorized expenses credited to the payroll of Drake.

Among the charges were payments of Drake’s personal water utility bill and electric bill, the purchase of a flat-screen television, auto repairs, a doctor’s bill, a vacation for a friend, a limousine ride for a friend’s daughter and supermarket purchases. The unauthorized expenses on her payroll amounted to about $20,000.

Drake was booked into the Vigo County Jail on Friday, with bail set at $35,000 with no 10 percent allowed.

Bolk appointed a public defender to Drake’s case, and set a trial date of Oct. 10
