TERRE HAUTE —
Visitors to Collett Park on Terre Haute’s northside today can get a tree seedling and learn to identify the ash tree, which faces damage from the emerald ash borer.
The small insect, which destroys ash trees, has been officially identified in Indiana since 2004 and is spreading throughout the state.
From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sheryle Dell, Terre Haute city forester, will be in the park to answer questions and distribute 300 tulip poplar seedlings, which is the state tree of Indiana.
“They are for anybody to plant on their own property,” Dell said. “They are like an ash tree, as they grow straight up and get about the same size. They have few problems. They need to be planted in a large area and should have at least an eight [foot] by eight [foot] area. This is for planting in yards, not in the right of way.”
Dell has identified about 25 ash trees in Collett Park, marked with green paper attached by purple ribbons. Dell also planned to tag walnut trees in the park, as they look similar to an ash tree, to allow people to learn the difference.
“I have some handouts as well. I want this to be interactive and have people walk around and look at the trees to see what an ash tree looks like,” Dell said.
The marking of the ash trees will visually show how the landscape in the city park could change if the trees were all cut down as a result of damage from the emerald ash borer.
