T-S publisher gains role with Texas publications

Riley also to remain in charge of Tribune-Star

TERRE HAUTE — Tribune-Star publisher B.J. Riley isn’t running for elective office this campaign season — but that didn’t stop the newspaper’s parent company from giving him a vote of confidence.

Keith Blevins, chief operating officer of Community Newspaper Holdings Inc., on Friday announced Riley’s promotion to senior vice president and division manager of the company’s Sun Belt Division of Texas publications.

The promotion will allow Riley to remain publisher of the Tribune-Star and continue living in Terre Haute, while also overseeing 12 daily and four nondaily publications in Texas.

While Riley looks forward to his new corporate role, he also is gratified to remain in Terre Haute.

“I’m really pleased to be able to stay here,” Riley said of the community his family has called home since 2009. He has been active in the community, serving as a board member of the Terre Haute Chamber of Commerce, the United Way of the Wabash Valley and Downtown Terre Haute Inc., among other involvements.

In addition to his wife, Mary, Riley’s family includes four sons, two of whom are grown.

“B.J. is a proven leader with a rich background in product quality and revenue growth, and we are excited to have him in this expanded leadership role on the CNHI team,” Blevins stated in announcing the advancement. “He understands the importance of local news and advertising content to our success.”

Riley’s 25-year career in newspapers began at age 25, when he accepted an advertising sales position at the Daily Telegraph in his hometown of Bluefield, W.Va. His career path has led him to publications in Kentucky, Ohio and Indiana, and to corporate leadership roles in Florida.

While chief operating officer for Horizon Publications, Riley oversaw 20 daily and 14 weekly publications, many of which were similar in size — the 3,000 -10,000 circulation range — to those he’ll be working with in Texas.

“There’s nothing better than community newspapering,” Riley said. “Those publications are generally the fabric of their communities.”

And as far as companies that produce community newspapers, CNHI leads the pack, he added.

“I really appreciate CNHI’s approach to newspapering,” he said of the Montgomery, Ala., company, which owns more than 80 daily and 40 nondaily publications.

Yet this year, the company is upgrading its technology systems to advance a five-platform, multimedia strategy that incorporates print, mobile devices, desktop computers, Twitter and Facebook.

CNHI’s business model will enable it to stay at the forefront of proving readers with multiple ways to access information. Those advancements, Riley said, will make the Tribune-Star a more valuable asset to the Wabash Valley.

Riley is sold on CNHI. “They really are, in my opinion, the top newspaper company in the U.S., and I look forward to working with them in Texas.”
