NEW: VCSC exclusions to start March 21 for secondary students not vaccinated

TERRE HAUTE — Starting March 21, many Vigo County School Corp. middle and high school students will be excluded from school if they have not received state-required vaccinations.

“While we regret taking this action, it is necessary under the law,” says Ray Azar, director of student services.

Secondary principals are being instructed to include the exclusion notice on all correspondence sent home to parents of middle and high school students.

The district has conducted free shot clinics at each school except for Terre Haute South Vigo and North Vigo high schools.

“Students in schools where clinics have taken place and who still have not been vaccinated or furnished records to the schools will be excluded from school beginning March 21,” the notice to parents says.

The vaccinations are required for students in grades 6-12 unless a waiver is signed for religious or medical reasons.

“These vaccinations were due last September but the school corporation gave extra time and provided for shot clinics to help parents,” the notice states.

Students still have time to get vaccinated or to get a signed vaccination schedule from their doctor. Clinics at South on March 17 and North on March 24 are open to all VCSC students in grades 6-12 with a signed consent form and a copy of present vaccination records. The shots are free of charge unless families have insurance that covers vaccinations of this type.

Students who attend North and South and who have not been vaccinated also will face exclusion at a date to be determined after spring break. “We urge those students to participate in clinics at their schools to avoid being excluded and losing high school credit. In some cases, losing credit may interfere with graduation for seniors.

Those who have questions should contact their school nurse.

The three required vaccinations are varicella (chickenpox), Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis) and meningococcal (meningitis). Some students only need one or two of the vaccinations. Those who have a history of chicken pox are not required to take the varicella vaccine, although there must be written verification by the parent or physician.
