Police investigate possible mail tampering in Clay County

TERRE HAUTE — An apparent case of mail tampering has authorities in Clay County asking residents to check their mail boxes and monitor their bills.

The Clay County Sheriff’s Department said Sunday that deputies were called to a section of Indiana 340 on reports of apparent tampering with mail boxes. The deputies noticed pieces of mail scattered along the roadway.

An investigation led deputies to a residence where they questioned two juveniles who were later taken to a juvenile detention facility until they can appear in court.

A news release stated that the juveniles allegedly opened several pieces of mail on Indiana 340 between County Road 200 West and County Road 300 West. The juveniles kept some of the mail but discarded other pieces, police stated.

The sheriff’s department is asking anyone living along Indiana 340 in that area to check his or her mail box for signs of tampering. Residents also are being asked to monitor their bills to make sure they are not missing any that would cause future problems.

If you are a victim in this case, please contact the Clay County Sheriff’s Department at (812) 446-2535.
