Medical emergency may have led to crash

TERRE HAUTE — An Indiana State University student may have had a medical emergency on Wednesday afternoon, leading to a parking lot crash and a fire that damaged four vehicles.

At 1:47 p.m., emergency personnel were called to staff parking Lot 21 along Fourth Street after a vehicle crashed into three parked cars.

ISU Police Chief Bill Mercier said the driver of the car was incapacitated and was still inside the vehicle when police arrived. An ISU officer removed him from the burning car.

“He did a great job,” Mercier said of the officer’s actions to rescue the student. “It probably saved his life.”

The fire spread to include four vehicles. A fifth vehicle had slight body damage from the crash.

Personnel from the Terre Haute Fire Department also responded to the scene with several emergency vehicles. The driver was transported to Union Hospital.

Mercier said the cause of the accident remains under investigation.
