Vigo County Public Library program makes ‘Valentines for Veterans’

With U.S. Army veteran husband, library’s youth services coordinator spearheads effort

TERRE HAUTE — Jevy Lenderman helped her 15-month-old daughter, Charlotte, use a crayon to add some color to a valentine they made together Friday at the Vigo County Public Library.

They used stickers, paper cutouts, doilies and other materials to make “Valentines for Veterans.” The cards will be sent to the Richard A. Roudebush VA Hospital in Indianapolis.

The Lendermans went to the library for storytime, but then decided to make some valentines when they learned about the activity.

It’s a way to “show our appreciation and our love for veterans” at Valentine’s Day, Lenderman said.

For Holly Curtsinger, the library’s youth services coordinator, the cause “is dear to my heart.” Her husband, Kyle, is a U.S. Army veteran who served active duty for 10 years.

When he was in the service, she always worked with children at military facilities through day care or preschool programs.

“It became part of our February routine to do a Valentines Day program and to send cards back to the states,” she said. “I always sent them to Roudebush because I was from Indiana.”

When she became the library’s youth services coordinator, she decided to bring the program here. She hopes to “bring awareness to the younger generations and let them know our veterans have done a lot for us.”

With the war in Iraq over and the conflict in Afghanistan targeted to end next year, “I don’t want people to forget,” Curtsinger said. Veterans still need the support, even after the conflict ends, she said.

She made a valentine that read, “Thank you for serving.”

Several children and parents stopped by the Young People’s Department throughout the day to make valentines, including Amber Mullins, who brought her 4-year-old son, Jacob. “I thought it would be fun for him,” she said.
