City man facing arson charges

TERRE HAUTE — A Terre Haute man faces six counts of arson and one count of auto theft for cases dating back to June 2008.

Paul E. Hoopingarner III, 27, appeared via video in Vigo Superior Court 1 on Tuesday where Judge John Roach set his bail at $75,000, cash only.

The probable cause affidavit filed in the case states that Hoopingarner told a confidential informant that he had set multiple fires at properties in Terre Haute.

Arson investigator Norman Loudermilk stated that he later interviewed Hoopingarner about those statements to the informant, and that Hoopingarner told police he had set fires in properties on Beech Street, North Ninth Street, Sixth Avenue, as well as setting fire to a stolen truck. Some of the incidents occurred in 2008, and others occurred in 2012.

Roach appointed a public defender to Hoopingarner’s case and set a trial date of April 1.

Hoopingarner also faces a charge of burglary and public intoxication for a December 2012 incident at another Terre Haute residence. He is scheduled to return to court on Feb. 11  for a hearing in that case.
