Area Plan Commission elects Wilson as president

TERRE HAUTE — After a year of often contentious, emotional and lengthy gatherings, the Vigo County Area Plan Commission enjoyed a meeting lasting just 11 minutes Wednesday night.

At their January meeting, the commissioners, who advise local lawmakers about zoning matters, heard just three non-controversial requests to subdivide small properties before re-electing existing board officers and adjourning for the night.

In 2012, the commission, which has 14 members appointed by area elected officials, was often at the center of controversial matters, including a proposed retirement community on Ohio Boulevard, proposed oil exploration near Hawthorn Woods neighborhood and the dispute between Cobblestone Crossings and the Woodgate subdivision.

The commission, which requires eight members present to do business, currently has four vacancies. Earl Rodgers, the long-time representative from West Terre Haute, has stepped down, leaving one vacancy. Also, each year the Vigo County Commissioners and the Terre Haute City Council send representatives. In 2012, Paul Mason, who lost his re-election bid in November, represented the commissioners. Todd Nation represented the City Council. A fourth vacancy is to be filled by Mayor Duke Bennett.

The commission re-elected Fred Wilson as president, John Hanley as vice president and Norm Froderman as secretary. The commissioners also opted to continue meeting the first Wednesday evening of each month at 7 p.m.
