Swope rolls out its painted mini car fundraiser

TERRE HAUTE — A couple of hot cars parked on Ohio Street’s sidewalk Friday night, as a community of artists celebrated new wheels.

The Swope Art Museum mingled its First Friday event with the open house kicking off its “Cruising around in Terre Haute” project, as artists and sponsors alike packed the facility’s Education Center to check out 24 painted projects. Cruising around in Terre Haute is fundraiser for the museum, featuring mini cars. The project was inspired by the success of the colts project in 2007.

Outside the museum at Seventh and Ohio streets, cars sponsored by Thompson Thrift and Clabber Girl lined the sidewalk.

“Sixteen-thousand pieces of glass,” West Vigo Middle School art teacher Anna Lee Chalos-McAleese said proudly of her work on behalf of Thompson Thrift. Sparkling in the 78 degrees of setting sunshine, the wood car was covered in glass pieces with colors ranging the spectrum. Chalos-McAleese said she was inspired by the work of French artist Georges Seurat and thus named the piece the “Seurat Sedan.” All totaled it took her 40 hours and 100 pounds of glass. “I am impressed by the talent here,” she said back inside the museum where her own artwork will be on display beginning in October. “There’s something for everyone I think.”

The Clabber Girl car, created by Kevin Edwards, featured a unique arrangement of Rex coffee beans covering the structure.

“It’s a lot of fun,” Swope executive director Brian Whisenhunt said of the project. Sponsors paid $2,600 for each car. For an additional $400 they can keep it, or the work can be donated back to the Swope and auctioned off later, he explained. The group’s goal of raising $21,000 was exceeded as $34,000 had been generated by Friday evening. “We wanted to do a fun community art project and add some color and vitality to Terre Haute.”

Swope board member Terri Nolan said the mini cars will roll out onto the streets for display Aug. 17. On Dec. 3 they’ll be brought back in and, those not purchased by their sponsors, will be auctioned off with proceeds benefiting the museum.

“All of the artists did a fabulous job,” she said, pointing out the Ladybug design created for her own employer, First Financial Bank, by artist Kathy Moody.

Before they’re set free into the community, each car will be adorned with a small colts sticker somewhere on its structure. A scavenger hunt game will be played where competitors have to find all 24 of the stickers. Prizes will include painted colts left over from 2007.

The museum was filled well before the 7 p.m. public open house as artists, their families and sponsors milled about admiring each other’s work.

Whisenhunt, who came to the Swope in June of 2008 from the Blanton Museum of Art at the University of Texas, said Friday evening’s turnout was great.

“We have a lot of community support. That’s really illustrated by the sponsors and the cars and ideas,” he said.
