TERRE HAUTE —
Indiana State Police Thursday responded to three accidents within a five-hour span Thursday on the eastbound lanes of Interstate 70 in construction zones. No serious injuries were reported as a result of the crashes.
At 5:50 a.m., a tractor-trailer rollover crash occurred in the eastbound lanes on I-70 at the 49-mile marker, near the Putnam-Morgan county line. The tractor-trailer was eastbound in the construction zone and drifted off to the north side of the roadway, losing control and rolling over onto the driver’s side in the middle of the interstate.
As a result, both eastbound lanes were closed, however one lane was open to traffic by 9 a.m.
The semi tractor-trailer, a 2002 Freightliner, was driven by Miguel A. Fermin, 37, of Bronx, N.Y. He was hauling dry goods under the name of Cotui Transportation LLC of Clifton, N.J. Fermin sustained minor abrasions and was not transported to a medical facility, state police report.
The co-driver, Luis Torez, 45, was transported to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis for treatment of chest pain. Drugs and alcohol were not a factor and no citations were issued, said Indiana State Police Sgt. Joe Watts.
At 10 a.m., state police responded to another accident in the eastbound lane near the 18-mile marker. The driving lane was closed for construction.
State Trooper Ted Robertson, in a preliminary investigation, reports a black 2012 Ford Focus, driven by Bradley D. Smith, 42, of Terre Haute, was eastbound in the construction zone behind a unidentified semi tractor-trailer. As traffic began to slow, Smith was struck in the rear by a 2010 Freightliner tractor pulling a box trailer and driven by John C. Carson, 65, of Brantford, Ontario.
The impact then forced the Focus into the rear of the unidentified tractor-trailer which continued eastbound and was never located. Carson was driving for Celadon Canada Inc. No injuries were reported and Carson was issued a citation for following too closely.
At 10:45 a.m., state police and Putnam County emergency agencies responded to a motorcycle crash in the eastbound lanes of I-70 near the 42-mile marker.
A preliminary investigation from ISP Senior Trooper Joe Rutledge determined that John F. Ratcliff, 59, of Newark, Ohio, was eastbound on the interstate operating a black 2011 Harley Davidson when he suddenly veered into the median and crashed.
Ratcliff was not wearing a helmet and was transported by Putnam County Operation Life to IU Health-Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis for treatment of head and internal injuries. He was listed in fair condition at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, said hospital spokesman Gene Ford.
Watts said all three accidents “were driver error and not caused by the construction zone.”
