Two die in I-70 crash

PUTNAM COUNTY — Two fatalities were confirmed Friday evening after a multiple-vehicle accident occurred on Interstate 70.

Sgt. Joe Watts said a woman and her 3-year-old daughter were both pronounced dead, with the husband transported to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis along with other crash participants.

The accident occurred about 6:10 p.m. at the 43-mile marker of Interstate 70 in Putnam County just east of the U.S. 231 exit. The accident occurred in the eastbound lane, and according to Watts, investigators believe a driver’s failure to reduce speed led to the incident.

The driver of a semitrailer failed to stop as traffic slowed, Watts said, explaining this led to a collision into the rear of a pickup truck, pushing the pickup off into a wooded area south of the roadway. The semi continued on after that though, striking a passenger car in the rear and causing it to burst into flames. That car proceeded to strike yet another car in the rear, Watts said.

Passersby stopped and attempted to help individuals out of the burning car, Watts said.

The eastbound lane remained closed at 9 p.m. as police investigated the scene. Watts said names were not available for release.
