School Board hears good report on summer intern

Orr retires from human resources position; Newport taking over

TERRE HAUTE — For five years, Garmong Construction has offered a paid summer internship to a minority high school student interested in business and/or engineering.

On Monday, the Vigo County School Board heard from Khala Boyd, a Terre Haute North Vigo senior this year, who is the 2012 summer intern.

Boyd, who has a 3.7 grade-point average, had to go through a rigorous selection process that included a resume and interviews.

The internship “gives young people an opportunity to learn about the world of work,” said Carolyn Roberts, the school district’s diversity consultant.

Boyd spent part of the time at the site of a new residence hall that has been under construction for the past year at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.

The residence hall will be open in time for the new academic year.

Boyd told the School Board that she’s had a great experience and “I’ve had the opportunity to meet people and do things I’ve never done before.”

Her future goals include studying to be a nurse or nurse practitioner.

Roberts said she had hoped that other businesses would provide similar internship opportunities for minority students, but so far that has not happened.

In other matters, the School Board observed a moment of silence for Tre’ Russell Fletcher, 17, a Terre Haute North student who died unexpectedly last week.

The board also said good-bye to John Orr, who has served as director of human resources since 1999. He is retiring.

Orr spent 34 years with the school district in capacities that included director of student services, assistant principal at West Vigo High School, assistant principal at Honey Creek and classroom teacher.

Mick Newport is the new director of human resources.
