Tire amnesty program receives health award

TERRE HAUTE — A local agency’s ongoing effort to clean up Vigo County earned state honors this month.

Vigo County Health Commissioner Enrico Garcia, informed his board Wednesday that the department’s annual tire amnesty program was recently awarded the Tony and Mary Hulman Health Achievement Award in the field of environmental health.

“This is really very important,” he said, crediting the work of the department’s staff for the honor.

Health department administrator Joni Wise and staff member Mike Grayless said the project’s success is because of community involvement.

“It takes everyone,” Grayless said.

Wise said the program was initiated in 2003 and has collected between 60,000 and 65,000 tires since.

In other business, the department reported issuing 1,299 vaccines between July and September. During those same months, 37 cases of Hepatitis C were documented.

Wise said the department’s budget was moving through the approval process of county government, and she was happy to report that employees would be getting 5 percent pay raises.
