Men who killed inmate sentenced to life in prison

TERRE HAUTE — Two men who killed a fellow inmate inside the U.S. Penitentiary, Terre Haute, were sentenced to life in prison without parole Monday in U.S. District Court.

Timothy R. McCallister, 34, and Jerimy C. Sneed, 33, had pleaded guilty to murdering Rock Halsey, 49.

Halsey was the son of television and Hollywood film actor Brett Halsey.

According to information in a U.S. Attorney’s news release:

McCallister and Sneed killed Halsey on Aug. 10, 2005 in Unit E-1. McCallister stabbed Halsey with a prison-made knife while Sneed held him down in a killing witnessed by a correctional officer and partly caught on tape by a surveillance camera. Halsey’s throat was cut.

The correctional officer saw the two killers on top of Halsey on the floor, and pulled them off. As the officer began handcuffing Sneed, McCallister resumed stabbing Halsey before complying with the officer’s order to lie on the floor.

Sneed, who is from Missouri, was serving time in prison after being convicted in Iowa of murder for hire. McCallister had been convicted in West Virginia of bank robbery, said Tim Morrison, assistant U.S. attorney. Halsey had served about half his 24-year sentence out of California on convictions related to methamphetamine trafficking and weapons.

Judge Larry McKinney sentenced Sneed and McCallister.

Halsey was the former lead singer of the punk rock group Rock Bottom & the Spys. His father’s 50-year acting career includes such credits as “Ma and Pa Kettle at Home” (1954) and “Godfather Part III” (1990), daytime soaps and guest roles in such TV series as “Gunsmoke,” “Dukes of Hazzard” and “Fantasy Island.” His mother is Renate Hoy, Miss Germany in 1952 and herself an actor in the 1950s who was married to Brett Halsey from 1954 to 1959.
