MARSHALL, ILL. —
The colors of courage line the walls inside Marshall Public Library this month.
The traveling exhibit “2010 Lilly Oncology On Canvas: Expressions of a Cancer Journey” visits the library through Aug. 31, bringing more than 20 pieces depicting people’s battle with the disease.
Library director Nancy Claypool said this represents the first time this exhibit has come to town.
“That’s a pretty bold one,” she said, pointing out her favorite near the door. A cancer patient had painted flowers on her head, which was bald from chemotherapy.
Claypool said a library patron who had seen the exhibit inside Union Hospital’s Hux Cancer Center mentioned the idea to her.
“She was really impressed with the stories which go along with the artwork. They’re really neat,” she said.
The exhibit is open and free to the public from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
Library visitor April Sanders was among those present Friday afternoon as the pictures were set out on display.
“I like it,” she said of the collection.
Lilly Oncology on Canvas is a biennial art competition and exhibition that honors the journeys people face when confronted with a cancer diagnosis. The biennial competition invites individuals diagnosed with any type of cancer, as well as their families, friends, caregivers and healthcare providers, to express through art and narrative, the life-affirming changes that give their cancer journeys meaning.
The showing is presented by Lilly Oncology, in partnership with the National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship (NCCS).
A special reception will be hosted tonight at the library from 6 to 9 p.m. in the Dale McConchie meeting room. At the same time, Marshall’s Gaslight Art Colony will feature the photography of Tom Dagley at their monthly artist reception.
Claypool said the colony is just a block from the library and organizers hope visitors will stop at both.
Edie Breneman, a clerk at the library and colony member said the pictures contained in the exhibit are quite moving.
“There is a lot of variety to it. Some of it cheerful and some not so cheerful at all,” she said. “But it’s all very realistic.”
In conjunction with the exhibit, Hux Cancer Center radiation oncologist Dr. Robert Haerr will present a program titled “Cancer Controversies and Advances” Thursday, Aug. 23 at 6:30 p.m. The program will cover recent guidelines for breast, cervical and prostate screening as well as updates about the disease treatment.
