Wednesday night hay fire in semitrailer closes part of I-70

TERRE HAUTE — A load of hay on a flatbed trailer caught fire Wednesday night on Interstate 70 near the one-mile marker in Vigo County, closing the westbound lanes of the highway. At about 10 p.m., units from the Vigo County Sheriff’s Department and Sugar Creek Fire Department in West Terre Haute responded to the scene. The cause of the fire was undetermined. The driver of the semi was able to unhook the tractor from the flatbed and pull away. Debris from the hay fire spread to the median and caught an area of brush and dry grass on fire as well. Sugar Creek firefighters were on the scene for about three hours. Both of the westbound lanes were closed during the incident. No injuries were reported.
