T-S editor honored by state press association

Jones has been with paper since ’85

TERRE HAUTE — The leading newspaper industry trade organization in Indiana has given one of its top honors to Tribune-Star editor Max Jones.

The Hoosier State Press Association, which represents 175 daily and weekly paid-subscription newspapers in Indiana, on Thursday presented Jones with its 2011 Distinguished Service Award, its top award for service to the HSPA.

Jones, who has been with the Tribune-Star since 1985, accepted the award in front of more than 60 fellow-Indiana newspaper editors, publishers and other newspaper professionals at the Indianapolis Marriott Downtown. His wife, Helen, was also in attendance as was Tribune-Star publisher B.J. Riley.

“Sometimes a person shows up in leadership roles in so many different organizations, one takes it for granted he or she will be involved in the next large project,” said Tim Timmons, president of the HSPA board of directors who presented the award. “Max Jones is one of those people.”

Jones, a 1974-graduate of Indiana University and native of Loogootee, started working in the newsroom at the Tribune-Star in 1985 after working for 10 years at the Sullivan Daily Times. He was named editor of the Tribune-Star in October of 2000.

The HSPA reserves its Distinguished Service Award for someone who has had a significant impact on the newspaper industry in Indiana through service to the HSPA, has provided outstanding service to the newspaper industry in general and has demonstrated service to his local community, Timmons said.

In addition to serving as editor Terre Haute’s daily newspaper, Jones is president of the Indiana Debate Commission, an active member of the HSPA’s Newsroom Seminar Committee, a past president of the Indiana Associated Press Managing Editors, a member of the Friends of the Ernie Pyle Home in Dana and serves on the HSPA’s Freedom of Information committee

“He does things he doesn’t have to do,” said Karen Braeckel, president of the HSPA Foundation. “There are certain people, when a large project is going on, you just expect to be there. Max is one of them.”

The HSPA Distinguished Service Award has been given in years past to newspaper publishers, editors and even individuals outside of the newspaper industry. Accepting the honor, Jones said the award means a lot to him because it has previously gone to some of his fellow Hoosier editors.

“They were always an inspiration to me,” Jones said of past editors who have won the award. “I appreciate this honor. It really means a lot to me.”

Thursday night’s awards ceremony was part of the two-day HSPA “annual meetings and government conference” in downtown Indianapolis. Founded in 1933, the HSPA provides legal information, training and other services to its members. It also lobbies Indiana lawmakers for more transparency in government.

Jones “has a real passion for newspaper,” said Steve Key, executive director and general counsel for the HSPA. “He’s a genuinely terrific and good person you can always call on for help. And he’s a friend.”
