Authorities comb body dump site on county line

TERRE HAUTE — The ditches and tree rows along a one-mile stretch of the Vigo-Clay county line were searched Tuesday afternoon by two canine teams looking for a connection to a body found Saturday dumped along the road.

Dorene Hojnicki of Vigo County Emergency Management coordinated the effort of the Vigo County Search and Rescue Team as eight personnel combed the area searching for something out of the ordinary.

Vigo County Sheriff Greg Ewing along with deputies were at the scene during the search.

The woman’s death has been ruled a homicide by Vigo County Coroner Dr. Roland Kohr. The cause of death was blunt force trauma. Her body was found in a remote area off the west side of Hyde Road/Clay County Road 700 West about a mile north of Indiana 42. A fisherman driving home from a nearby pond saw the body about 10 yards off the road and notified police at about 6 p.m. Saturday.

Investigators are trying to determine how long the body had been where it was found. Preliminary estimates range from a week to a month or more.

The woman’s age has been estimated between 20 to 40 years. Her height is in the range of 5-feet-3 to 5-feet-5 inches tall. She weighed 130 to 160 pounds, is Caucasian, and has brown corn-rowed braids that extend past her shoulders. When her body was found, the woman was wearing black pants and black shoes with white soles. The shoes are described as black men’s Legit skate shoes with a white OP stitched on the tongue. The shoes are sold exclusively at Walmart.

Anyone with information about the woman’s identity or the circumstances of her death should contact the Vigo County Sheriff’s Department at 812-232-3801.
