VCSC towing unauthorized vehicles from downtown lot

TERRE HAUTE — The Vigo County School Corp. has begun working with an outside company to tow unauthorized vehicles parked in the administration building lot at 686 Wabash Ave.

Parking has become an issue with the opening of the Indiana State University Scott College of Business next door, said Ray Azar, VCSC director of student services.

At times, the district lot has been so full that employees and those attending meetings at the administration building have not been able to find a place to park on the district-owned lot, he said.

“We don’t want to tow people, but we also have to protect our parking,” Azar said.

So far, two cars have been towed, said Superintendent Dan Tanoos.

The district has an agreement with Andrews Towing, which has supplied parking stickers for district employees. Those who have business with the school district and want to park on its lot must go inside and obtain a parking tag at the reception desk, Azar said. The tag is good for one day.

The district began using the towing service the week of Oct. 22. The towing company may periodically drive through, although there is no schedule. The district also will check the parking lots.

“We have made a request that they [Andrews Towing] check with us to make sure we’re not towing away anyone that should be here,” Azar said. “But that’s not a foolproof plan, either. So if they’re not tagged, there’s a likelihood they’ll be towed.”

The Andrews Towing signs are “very visible,” he said.

The standard cost to recover an impounded vehicle would be $100, according to district officials and Dennis Andrews, who owns the towing business, located at 1416 S. 15th St.

Towing will be enforced from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. weekdays, but not evenings, Azar said.

Prior to use of a towing service, the district had tried other ways, such as putting stickers on cars or attempting to find and notify owners, he said.

At times, college students who parked in the district lot would be asked to leave, “and sometimes they would ignore us and continue to park there,” Azar said.

“We didn’t want to go this far, but it just got so out of hand we were having all kinds of problems,” he said. “We’d appreciate people’s understanding. The parking lot is for people doing business at Vigo County schools.”
