As customers purchase newer models of the iPhone, area retailers are ready for the re-sale.
Nick Helton, manager of iMechanic on South Third Street, said the store has been buying five to 10 older model iPhones a week since the announcement of the iPhone 5.
“We buy them and refurbish them,” he said inside the store, adding they also sell accessories. “We stock all the parts.”
A sign displayed inside the store informs customers that 95 percent of iPhones can be repaired, and for customers not interested in the price tag associated with an iPhone 5, a refurbished older model might make sense, he said.
Depending on the phone’s condition, the store might buy back an iPhone 4 at a price between $100 and $120 , while they’ll pay up to $200 for good models of the iPhone 4S. The 3Gs bring anywhere from $60 to $80, he said, emphasizing the range depends on the phone’s condition.
“We do buy broken ones as well,” he said.
iMechanic is a Bloomington-based company with plans to add stores in Indianapolis and Lafayette, said Devon Wadsworth, manager of the Bloomington stores. In Terre Haute on Friday afternoon, he said he personally carries an iPhone 4S and will upgrade to an iPhone 5 as soon as he can.
The Bloomington stores are buying back between 20 and 30 iPhones a week, he said.
“I like the iPhone because it’s so simple and it integrates well with my Mac,” he said.
In addition to buying iPhones, the group repairs iPods and iPads, Helton said.
