TERRE HAUTE —
Lisa M. Carder, 55, of Olathe, Kan., has been identified by Indiana State Police and the Vigo County coroner’s office as the victim of a fatal Sunday crash on Interstate 70.
Carder died and her husband, Thomas Carder, 59, was injured in the 6:55 p.m. crash near the 12-mile marker of eastbound I-70. Thomas Carder remains hospitalized with multiple injuries at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis where he was listed in critical condition late Monday evening.
Lisa Carder was driving a 2009 Chevrolet Colorado pickup truck that was the last vehicle involved in a chain-reaction accident that also left Anderson residents Connie Loyd, 48, and Charles Loyd, 50, hospitalized at Methodist Hospital, both in critical condition.
ISP Sgt. Chris Wright is investigating the crash. An initial report states that before the collisions occurred, a semi tractor-trailer had broken down and pulled over onto the right shoulder of the eastbound lanes of I-70 to wait for a tow truck. While the driver was waiting, a second semi tractor-trailer also broke down, but stopped in the right eastbound driving lane about 100 feet west of the semi that was stopped along the shoulder of the highway.
Eastbound traffic had to move over into the passing lane to get around the stopped semis, and driver inattention may have led to the crash, police report.
A tow truck crew had arrived and was assisting the semi stopped in the driving lane, police reported, when a third semi tractor-trailer, driven by Richard L. Merry, 51, of Hamilton, Ohio, ran into the rear of the Loyd vehicle, a 2002 Chevrolet S10, which then collided with the rear of the Carder vehicle.
Merry was treated for minor injuries at Terre Haute Regional Hospital and released.
An autopsy on Lisa Carder had been planned for Monday, but was postponed until today.
The third semi, driven by Merry, rolled over an embankment.
Neither the tow truck crew nor the drivers of the two other semis were injured, police report.
When that accident took place, both disabled semi tractor-trailers were displaying emergency flashers, said Sgt. Joe Watts of the Indiana State Police. In addition, the driver of the semi that was stalled in the driving lane had deployed three emergency triangles at 50-foot increments as required by traffic regulations, he said.
Watts told the Tribune-Star that the accident occurred in a construction zone, but that factor did not play a role in the crash.
“The disabled semis originated the events, with other drivers not paying attention,” Watts said.
As of Monday night, no citations had been issued in connection with the crash, but an investigation is ongoing, Watts said.
At the conclusion of Wright’s investigation, which could take one week, a report will be submitted to the Vigo County Prosecutor’s Office for review, Watts said.
