TERRE HAUTE —
No one was injured just before noon Thursday when a piece of road construction equipment was backed into a 4-foot deep hole at an Interstate 70 work zone in Clay County, falling onto its side and blocking both lanes of traffic.
The vehicle, described by Indiana State Police in a press release as “backhoe style equipment,” was moving in reverse in a closed westbound lane at the 23-mile marker when it dropped into a hole estimated at 9 feet square and 4 feet deep. The machine’s boom landed in the westbound driving lane, but did not strike any other vehicles. The driver worked for Wabash Valley Asphalt, police said.
A wrecker service was called to the scene to right the vehicle, police said.
Traffic was slowed and periodically stopped for nearly two and one-half hours during the incident.
