Terre Haute parks officials are bracing for cuts as their 2013 budget heads down the approval process.
Eddie Bird, superintendent of the Terre Haute Parks and Recreation Department, said Wednesday the department’s budget, unanimously approved by the parks board, must pass city and state approvals.
The 2013 budget of approximately $2.6 million represents 0.83 percent in cuts from last year, when $242,000 was cut by the state. Three years ago the department lost $800,000, and in total, some $1.3 million has been taken out over the last five years, Bird said.
“It makes it tough. You try to budget ahead for what you want to do,” he said, adding no layoffs have been planned at this point.
In other business, Bruce Rosselli, director of recreation, updated the board about programming participation this year. Deming Pool, he said, had 7,650 swimmers this season, and also served as training facility for 200 U.S. Marines as they practiced water tactics. The park’s 10-week summer camp drew an average of 55 kids per week, in spite of record high temperatures, he said.
The inaugural Memorial Day 5K was successful, with more than 200 participants. Changes for next year include calling it the “Deming-Dobbs-Dash 5K Run/Walk,” and incorporating both parks in the course.
