TERRE HAUTE —
The crowd of blues fans grew late into the night at the Crossroads of America.
The 12th annual Blues at the Crossroads festival kicked off Friday evening with the Terre Haute Children’s Choir followed by Yearbook Committee. Music returns to the stage at Seventh Street and Wabash Avenue at 3:15 p.m today.
Bob Flott, music fan and owner of B3 Entertainment, remarked at the volume of musical talent contained within the Wabash Valley. And that talent sparks interest, and the interest continues to bring a crowd.
“There’s tons of stuff going on,” he said, noting the number of live jam sessions hosted regularly in Terre Haute.
This year’s Blues at the Crossroads, he said, has a lot of talented blues artists, something he as a fan appreciates.
The two-day music festival wraps up today with seven acts, beginning with Terre Haute native Jill Shutt all the way through the closing sets by The Ragbirds. Admission price is $10 and seating is available in the streets, sidewalks, grass and curbs surrounding the downtown blocks. This year’s event features a JumboTron screen near the Crossroads Plaza, and food vendors offer amenities throughout the venue.
The weather forecast for today is sunny with high temperatures in the upper 70s. Attendance in past years has ranged upward of 10,000 and blues fans are encouraged to bring lawn chairs.
Many of the acts have albums and music available online, and Friday night attendee Ashley Wadsworth said some are even featured in the Vigo County Public Library.
“This is actually the first time I’ve ever come here,” she said. The library, she said, offers a database of music for downloading. Jennie DeVoe, Sena Ehrhardt, the W.T. Feaster Band and The Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band are among those available for download.
Musically, Wadsworth said Friday night’s music was going all right by her.
“I like it,” she said.
Meanwhile, Ethan Hixon wore a green and gold Lambda Chi Alpha shirt like those of his classmates from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology as they helped organizers keep the street free of litter.
“I’ve never been here actually,” the Newton, Ill., native said. “I know a little about it, but it’s actually very new to me”
