Jack Maynard, ISU provost, to step down next summer

TERRE HAUTE — Indiana State University Provost Jack Maynard plans to step down as provost and vice president for academic affairs effective June 30, 2013.

“I have submitted my request to President [Dan] Bradley and he has accepted,” Maynard, 64, wrote in a letter to the campus community.

The timing will enable the campus to initiate a search, he wrote.

“It has been an honor serving the campus in this role,” Maynard stated in the letter. There is much to celebrate, he wrote, including strong enrollment, new academic programs, a successful comprehensive campaign and quality athletic programs.

This year will be Maynard’s 10th as ISU provost. He came to ISU in 2001 as dean of the College of Education.

In his letter, Maynard said, it is his goal to return to the Bayh College of Education “and to share some of what I have learned in 35 years of college and university administration with the next generation of educational leaders.”

In an interview Thursday afternoon, Maynard said, “It’s the right time … I always said I hope I know when it’s time, and for me I think it’s the right time to make this change.”

He said President Bradley “has been very supportive” and they have “a great working relationship.”

He has served as provost under Bradley’s tenure for the past four years, and for five years prior to that with former President Lloyd Benjamin. “This gives Dan a chance to break in a new provost during his tenure,” Maynard said.
