Formal charges coming Tuesday in late-night stabbing

TERRE HAUTE — Formal charges are to be filed Tuesday for a Terre Haute man charged with intimidation after an early Wednesday incident near 19th and Locust streets.

Phillip Andrew Evans, 34, appeared in Vigo Superior Court 1 on Thursday where he told Senior Judge Michael Eldred that the incident was a “hyper-intense situation” and that he had consumed “a great deal of alcohol” prior to the incident.

Police responded to the scene after receiving a report of a man being stabbed. The victim was transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Evans apologized in court for his actions. Detective Starla Neidigh stated that Evans yelled at and threatened police, and also threw beer bottles from his upstairs apartment window while yelling “grenade.”

Evans has a criminal history that includes a felony battery conviction, criminal trespass, driving while suspended, possession of marijuana and theft.

Judge Eldred found probable cause for his arrest on the charge of class-D felony battery, and set bail at $35,000 cash only.
