Family tries to raise $682 for tombstone

3-year-old died Aug. 2 after drowning accident

TERRE HAUTE — A child’s grave remained unmarked Sunday as her family attempts to raise $682 for a tombstone.

The family of Savannah Orman, 3, gathered at The Gift of Love consignment shop at 1152 N. Lafayette Ave. Owned by Neoma Bell, Savannah’s grandmother, the store served as the site of a fundraiser as the family offered dinner for donations.

“I know Savannah is in heaven and she’s a beautiful angel,” Bell said, adding any funds in excess of those needed for a grave marker will be given to Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis.

Tom McCarter, Savannah’s grandfather, said the child’s grave in Grandview Cemetery on South 13th Street is presently unmarked.

“Just the flowers and fresh dirt that’s there,” he said. “That’s it.”

Bell said estimates for a simple headstone are about $682.

Orman was discovered unresponsive in a residential swimming pool the morning of July 29. She died Aug. 2 at Riley Hospital for Children.

Maria French served as cook for the afternoon fundraiser, working the grill as hot dogs and hamburgers were prepared.

“I just hope and pray it works and we get her a tombstone,” she said. “She was taken away before her time and she deserves that.”
